RONALD BALLANTYNE -BIOGRAPHY
WOODLAND CREE FROM NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN
THE EXPERIENCE OF HAVING BEEN RAISED MATERNAL GRANDPARENTS PROVIDED ME NOT TO ONLY WITH THE CREE LANGUAGE FLUENCY, BUT ALSO THE APPRECIATION OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND THE VIRTUES OF RESPECT FOR ALL PEOPLE.MY CHILDHOOD YEARS CONSISTED OF TIME SPENT AT MY GRANFATHER'S TRAPLINE AND FISH CAMP. THIS DEPENDED ON THE SEASONS. WITH THOSE SURROUNDINGS, I OBSERVED THE NATURAL BEAUTY AND THE ANIMALS IN IT; I WAS VERY FORTUNATE TO GAIN THIS ASPECT OF MY HERITAGE THUS, I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REFLECT THIS ON MY ART; THE OTHER DRAWINGS THAT MAY BE IDENTIFIED WITH THE FIRST NATIONS ARE ALSO DEPICTED IN BOOK 1, INCLUDING EAGLE, PEACE PIPE, BIRCH BARK BASKETS, AND SO ON. I AM SELF-TAUGHT AND CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE A DEVELOPING ARTIST.
